In germany it is common for a local food to be named after the place of its origin. Frankfurters, commonly known as hotdogs, were a favorite in Frankfurt. Jelly doughnuts were favored in Berlin, and the treat became known as the Berliner. In Hamburg, it was common to eat meat scraps on a round bun; thus the hamburger. Frankfurters and Hamburgers were brought to the united states and have become favorites. These dishes have also changed from their original states to where "hamburger" can refer to a sandwhich made from a ground beef patty or just ground beef in general, whereas the original was not necessarily beef at all.

In Hamburg, a man from Siam
Thought he was on to a scam
If his burger had meat
A charbroiled, beefy treat
Then why was it named after ham?

When hamburgers first came around
People slapped in what meat they could scrounge
It became very clear
They should drink lots of beer
To get all the greasy stuff down!

Hamburgers are better than hot dogs
Which are made out of goobers and meat clogs
They're a strange mystery meat
Made from gizzards and feet
Or the innards of lizards and frogs!

Oh, okay, not really. Any other strange questions, hamburger man???

Maybe it used to have ham. But one day a guy cilled a cow and put the meet on it. Half of our food was made by accident. Just like silly putty.

All the red meat/ mammal made products are named something besides what they are actually made of. (pork, beef, veal) and all the birds are just called whatever they are. (chicken, turkey) i think it is cause of how the birds are so different from human (laying eggs, and feathers and all) that it's ok to think if them and still eat them...but for the mammals it's harder so they changed the names early in civilization...this is all totally my opinion...but it totally makes sense if you think about it.
