x² + 7x + 49/4 = 9 + 49/4
(x + 7/2)² = 85/4
x + 7/2 = ± √85 / 2
x = - 7/2 ± √85 / 2
x = (-1/2) (7 ± √85)

x² + 7x - 9 = 0

(a+b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
a² = x²
a = x

2ab = 7x
2bx = 7x
b = 7/2
b² = 49/4

x² + 7x + 49/4 - 85/4 = 0
(x+7/2)² = 85/4
(x+7/2) = ±sqrt(85)/2
x = (-7±sqrt(85))/2

x2 + 7x - 9 = 0
x2 + 7x + 49/4 = 9 + 49/4
(x + 7/2)2 = 85/4
x + 7/2 = sqrt(85)/2
x = -7/2 +- sqrt(85)/2
