Most new Laptops come with one year warranty. The salespersons at the dealers always recommend getting a 3-year warranty from them (2 years on top of the mfr's 1 year with more coverage). What's the chance of a Laptop's breaking down in the first 3 years? I am scared to listen to what the salesperons have warned but C$350 is not a small amount when compared to the cost of the Laptop. Is it really very expensive to fix a Laptop as I was told? Please advise. Thanks a lot.

If, and only if, accidental breakage and battery replacement is included in an extended warranty is it worth the money. Laptops ARE very expensive to repair and, with proper care, should last for many years.

Realistically though, laptops do become obsolete faster than desktops due to limited hardware upgrade-ability. Only hard drives and RAM can be replaced, in most models.

So, 3 - 4 years as about the practical usable lifespan.
