Although in poor taste, the teacher addressing the costumes could have been trying to be humorous.

Was it part of a lesson, or a direct hit??
I could understand it coming from a sociology class, or even a language class. After all, what is white trash? Just two words strung together and often used out of context to insult a person and their race. I recently threw out white trash (a very heavy dresser). I am not trash, no person could ever be trash. I'm more of a white work in progress. Hey, that's a good come back.

Sad fact is that if the teacher had made any comment starting black.. eg. "are you a black idiot?" then his feet wouldn't have touched the ground and he'd have probably never taught again.

If we want to tackle racism then we need to start from a level playing field and say that any form of colour discrimination or related term of abuse is wrong. If he's ok to say White Trash then it should be ok for him to use the n' word as well. It clearly isn't so yes it was unacceptable.

Most of the time the answer would be no. But if the teacher was referring to the quality of the work that was done rather than the persons attributes, it could be acceptable but in poor taste.

No, it is NOT appropriate. Tell your parents or speak with your school counselor. You shouldn't have to put up with this type of abuse from a school teacher.

yeah it is very inappropriate. Teachers have no place in making derogatory remarks of any sort.
