A legal change of name is different depending on which state you live in. A good place to start would be your local clerk of courts. You shouldn't need a lawyer for any reason. In Ohio I took my step fathers last name at the age of 18. I had to file the intent and place a personals ad in the local paper.
Then pay the filing fee but forget how much that was, so many years ago.

Go to the social security office and have it changed. Not a big deal, you can change your name any time you want to.
If your over the age of 18.
