What are the mechanics (steps involved) in doing this? My text just provides examples without explaining what is going on, how things are moved, etc. Example:

1.
6x -5y = 9
(1/2)x +2y =6

2.
x-7y = -6
4x-5y = 28

Well, I've never actually heard the term. But I imagine the idea is something like this:

Add together 2 times the first LHS of #1 and 5 times the second LHS of #1. That gives 14 1/2 times X, with the Y terms canceling out. And it has to equal 2*9 + 5*6 = 48. So X = 96/29.

Hmm. That's not actually the best way to do the problem. The best way would be to say x = 12 - 2y and substitute that into the first equation. Maybe you made a typo, and the numbers work out more neatly in the correct version of the problem?
