On may 22, 1856, Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts was attacked by Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina. Using a cane, Brooks beat Sumner unconscious.
Brooks was censured, resigned his office, and was immediately re-elected. Sumner eventually recovered and resumed his Senate seat.
