well, actually, horses were native to the americas in prehistoric times until about 10 to 20,000 years ago.. either the ice age or humans(maybe both) killed them off. modern horses(mustangs) are decended from horses that escaped from the spanish around the 1600's.

They came with the ice age, then died out. The Conquistadores brought about 45 horses and the ones that were let loose, stolen or escaped became the wild horse herds in the American west.

The Spanish conquistadors brought them to North America in about 1541.
