How 'small'?
Change how you use your words.
Well, you see, movies and made-up dramas are kinda of 'fake'. Rich people can have a million swords in their house. Japanese homes are not small. As you think they would be. The ceiling are just low, that's all.

I have stayed with my Japanese friends in their own home on several occasions. The size of these homes ranged from small to large and in none of these homes were there katana displayed on the wall. However, the father of my friend in Gifu-ken is a collector. They in live in a semi-large house, and have a 'yoroi' displayed in a cabinet in the livingroom. 'yoroi' is a complete outfit of protection that Samurai used to wear, including the helmet and sandals. He also has two real katana, but they are not displayed on the wall there either.

the chances of your average Japanese home possessing a true Katana is very slim, as they were outlawed at the end of WW2 and anyone who owned one was required to turn them into the government. those who hid them still do so.
besides, many interior walls are Shoji panels and not strong enough to carry the weight.

I think you asked the same question before. I guess you want many Japanese people to have katana swords at home. But like I said before, it's not very common. You just need to deal with the fact.
And I just want to let you know that I lived in Japan for more than 20 years and of course I went to so many houses of my Japanese friend's and relatives' and I never saw traditional Japanese swords displayed at any of the houses. It's just not normal to have Samurai swords at home. Ask any Japanese people about that.
However, when we have " Kodomo no Hi ( Children's Day), " we display "Yoroi Kabuto" that comes with a small Japanese sword and arrows and a bow other than Yoroi and Kabuto.Yoroi and Kabuto are traditioanl samurai armors and helmet which look like these:

This is to celebrate boys (not adult men) and by displaying this, we believe that it can protect boys (not girls) from accidents or disaster. But we display Yoroi Kabuto for probably 10 days or so.
My brother has this. And it does come with one small sword. My mom told me once before that it is sharp enough to hurt people.
And for your question, usually people who want to display traditional Japanese stuff goes to Tokonoma in Washitsu (Tatami room).
Tokonoma is a small raised alcove to display scrolls and art objects, which look like this: http://www.japanesearchitect.com/tokonomaset/index.html
And if people have Japanese swords, they would probably display them at Tokonoma like this: http://image.blog.livedoor.jp/hisnaitoblog/imgs/6/b/6b3492f3.JPG
Tokonoma's space varies from home to home and of couse depending on the size of swords, some swords might be too big or too small to be displayed. But my parents' house's tokonoma is probably 1.6' long and 6.6' wide. It's not very big but it's spacious enough to display art objects, I think. My mom usually displays a scroll and Ikebana. And she used to display Yoroi Kabuto in front of Tokonoma.Well...she doesn't need to display that anymore since my brother is adult now.
But anyway...usually it's not very common to display real Samurai swords because Japanese people are not used to have " weapons" at home. I guess you know why we don't carry " weapons" if you know the history of Japan. And usually people who have katana at home are, like I said before, people who are yakuza, people who worship yakuza or yakuza wannabees or collectors. I know you want many Japanese people to have katana at home but that's not common. Seriously ask any Japanese people.
