hello, i was wondering about a problem that i have with my brakes on a 95 Pontiac grand am se coupe. the problem started with the car kinda shaking whenever I would come to a stop. also the car kinda hesitated when stopping, kinda like it wasn't stopping to it's full capacity. This went on for a couple of days so i checked my brake fluid and saw that it was low, so i filled it up. Noticed about a week later that the same thing was going on, so i filled it up again and chalked it up to a a leaking brake fluid system and was content with filling it up every week. So i kept filling it up but noticed that the shaking would get worse and even happened when the brake cylinder was filled up to the top. Fast forward 2 months or so, i come home from college ( my car was sitting in the same spot for the whole 2 months), and decide to go to the store. read the additional comments to see the rest of the question

so as im driving down the street i try to stop and the brakes start pulsating and feel like they weren't going to stop. so my question is what could the problem be... just worn out shoes and pads, or something like the abs sensor... and also I'm a capable mechanic, so would i be able to fix these problems myself, or have to go to a shop....thanks for reading it all.

Ok, the shaking is from warped rotors and pads. That's easy, replace pads and rotors or have rotors machined. The part I don't like is that you kept adding brake fluid. Was the level going down? the brake system is a sealed system, you should not have to add fluid that often. Check for leaks, check you brakes rotors/drums for humidity, your brake lines. take the hose off the brake power booster and using a flash light inspect the inside to see if the fluid is going there.

i anticipate you recognize that's the rears because you utilized the hand/emergency brake and it pulsated? Or are you guessing? Do you have ABS? Is the sunshine coming near continuously or once you sense the pulsation? some fool stick engineer at Chrysler/Jeep (and probably different vehicle makers besides) desperate that the superb variety of ABS become the stress the driving force to launch the brake pedal to keep away from skidding (No brakes are greater suited than skidding?). This creates a rhythmic up and down in the brake pedal whilst utilized IF the wheel sensors are finding out on up a difference in wheel velocity (are you working one in all those little spare wheels as a replace of having the genuine tire repaired?) Did you replace one or 2 tires and not get a similar length because of the fact something of the tires? in case you pull the fuse for the ABS and the subject is going away, you recognize that this line of reasoning will locate the subject.

there's air in the lines. start at the back right tire and crack the brake line while a helper pumps the brake pedal to push all the air out. tighten the line, refill the fluid, and move onto the left rear tire and do the same. after that go to the front right tire, then the front left tire last. that will rid your brake lines of all the air. but it won't stop the leak. i can't help you there, you just gotta look for it. good luck:)

Good question.
It could be that your pads and shoes are worn.
But if not, you could have air in your brake line from when it went low. Did it go low enough to get below where the brake line connects to the master cylinder? If this is the case, you would have to bleed the air out of the brake line.

the shaking when u break is coming from warped rotors you need to replace them or get them resurfaced. your brake pads got so bad that now everytime you break it shakes because your grinding your rotors, replace ur rotors and brake pads..

From your description, I would guess warped rotors on the front wheels. Please do not disregard this problem. Replacing the rotors and pads is a job you can do, but for your own safety, do it soon. Good luck!
