Go to some 'country' stores in your area...they always have some nice signs with lovely sayings on them (family things). Pick up a nice piece of lumber at the hardware store, cut to size, maybe router the edges, and paint something on it....inexpensive and will have enough to make a couple of different signs....children love their names for their bedroom doors, or nicknames, or just words such as princess, dream, etc....

I can't say much about crafty gifts. But I thought I'll mention one store in particular - The Bombay Company.

I don't know if it has a branch in your city or not. If it does, this is a good time to buy some Christmas gifts from them. The company has filed for bankruptcy and their US stores will close by Christmas this year. I went to one of the stores and they have discounted their items quite a bit at this time. I bought some good stuff from them at a fairly reasonable price. And I've always found that their home accessories make great gifts.

If you have children, have the kids make something for them, family fun online has some great things they can do. but if it is just you and your husband and ya want something crafty, try making them a fleece throw blanket. All you do is get two different colors of fleece (amount depends on the size you want the blanket to be) put them together and cut little strips along the sides about three inches deep, tie them together, no sewing needed!!! My kids made these for some kids last year that were in the hospital. They are great gifts that will keep your family warm.

Our family makes up "gift certificates" for jobs to be done later. One year we (I have 5 other siblings) all gave a certificate to my parents to help them clean out the attic and one to help clean out the garage and basement. We make a family get together when we do this. Your time is more valuable than a gift that will sit in a closet. An added benefit is that many hands make what is usually a drudge a great deal easier. When we did the attic we found many special trinkets that my mom had been saving and she sent them home with us kids. I hope this helps - Mary

Try making a gift basket with things they like. I used to sell a lot of these. Most people liked our one that had two wine glasses,a bottle of wine, a certificate for order in dinner, a soft throw blanket, and a movie of their choice. If you need it more cost effective you may just want to take out the dinner, but it only cost me about 30 for the rest.

My mother in law doesn't bake holiday cookies now that there are just 2 of them at home, so this year they are getting a ton of homemade cookies from my husband & I. Along with that we usually get them a bag of coffee & an annual ornament.
