I recently dug into my compost pile to spread it out for the winter, i found deep in the center small maggot looking things but smalller and more yellow (but definately alive), i didnt know if these are baby earthworms or something that I don't need growing in my garden. I took pictures if anyone needs me to post them. Just curious thanks. ps this is my first attempt at a compost pile thanks.

if there's something living in the center of your compost pile, then the pile isn't cooking... if it was, the temperature would be too high to be a comfy place for critters to hang out.... get the pile working by adding some greens and water... if no fresh greens are available, try some rabbit food in pellets (alfalfa).... add it and water and turn the pile a little... add dry leaves at the same time, like a full bushel baskety full....to a pound of pellets.... and enuff water to make it all 'wet' but not soggy.....check in a couple days to see if there's warmth....when there is, the critters will have left town.... *smile*

baby earthworms LOOK like earthworms..brown...what you have sounds like BUGS..(as in pests, not what you want in a compost pile..)
