Typically when writing research papers, you can start one of either two ways (depending upon what your instructor prefers). One, you can start off right from the bat by discussing you can state your argument and the sources you derive your argument from. OR two, you can do a general to specific topic discussion (not a summary!) leading into your argument. Either way, you want to provide some contextualization and MUST MUST MUST make sure you state the author and their source where you derived your supporting evidence from. A lead in to your thesis statement is a good way to go. For example, if your research paper was on treatments for breast cancer, a good opening sentence would be "Breast cancer affects more than xxx women in the United States per year, causing heartache for women and their families alike. (Thesis) However, researchers have developed several new treatments in recent years....

your question is very vague...
for your introductory sentence.. have a broad subject sentence NOTHING too specific and then slowly narrow down as the paragraph continues..
the last sentence should be your thesis statement.
