Because they are smart enough to realize that allowing gay couples to marry does not "threaten" heterosexual marriage. They realize that same-sex couples are just as committed as heterosexual couples.

There are far bigger threats to marriage than allowing same-sex couples to join the institution. The high divorce rate and people waiting longer to get married are just two of them.

Canada prides itself on being a diverse and multi-cultral country that accepts the values of everyone. Don't think that same sex marriages are under the definition of marriage since "marriage" is a Christian term, shouldn't they be the ones to decide what it is? Maybe we should come up with another term for same sex "unions"?
