You could make a fun game of it. Everyone makes a donation to a charity of their choice and when you all get together, it could be fun finding out what charity each has donated too.Maybe you could just do an inexpensive grab bag gift for the smaller children too. Why don't you talk to the other family members and see what they think of this new plan. I think its great.

The Heifer Project is a great charity that gives livestock to poor people the world over, on the condition that when the animals reproduce, they share them with their neighbors. Therefore, entire villages are helped by this wonderful charity.
Also, if you google "Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation", this is an internet clearing house for various charities on the Pine Ridge Sioux reservation; they do different charity drives where you can send items to non-profit organizations on the reservation, such as school groups and battered womens shelters. Every year, my husband and I send presents to kids on the rez as part of our Christmas present to each other.

My family has always donated to our local children's hospital. We go to the hospital early in the day on Christmas Eve & play games with the kids, and even bring a few small toys for the lounge area.
Afterwards, we go home & start on the cooking for dinner & Christmas day. The whole family gets to be together & you remember the real reason for the season.

I work for a local hospital, and one year we raised money to donate toys to children who had to spend Christmas in the hospital. You could make it a family event and all go shopping for simple gifts, and have the family bring them to the hospital either on Christmas eve or Christmas day. Get the kids involved so they can get into the spirit of giving.

I think a good charity to donate to is the Gesundheit Institute. Did you ever see the movie "Patch Adams?"
This is a quote for their web site:
"In October of 2007, Patch Adams and the Gesundheit Board unveiled its campaign to raise $1 million dollars towards building a Teaching Center and Clinic on its land in West Virginia. The Center and Clinic will enable Gesundheit to see patients and teach health care design."
Their goal is to offer health care free of charge. Not just a free clinic, but an actual free hospital.

Allow the scrooges who wish not to participate to withdraw.
"World Vision" or "Compassion International" or "J.A.M" get everyone together to sponsor a child for a year or however long you want to. These 3 organizations utilize the most of their donations than any other hunger program.
That's such a terrific idea, Merry Christmas to you. Way to get in the spirit!

After my dad died, my family donated things to the Youth Center for our church that would be named after my dad. They had a list of things to choose from and each couple/family donated something instead of picking names for adults. Another idea would be to find a less fortunate family and buy gifts for the children in that family or donate gifts to Homes or Toy Drive type things

Yes a little, this year is difficult because we don't have much money my b/f is out of work but I do my best. I try to buy charity cards, I know not much goes to the charity but its better than nothing.

We collected pencils for The Pencil Project and were able to give hundreds of children a pencil and the gift of a chance at education. It's extremely easy and rewarding...
