When and WHY did "emo" become a thing?

It "became" in the late 80's as a form of music.

It became a "thing" about 4 years ago, when pre-teens realized that "goth" was just too scary for them.

EMO is worrying and sad behaviour

Emo was bad enough the muppet but some EMOs are right muppets

i don't like that word because it's just another label for people and
it started as a type of music
