Would it be logical to lower the price of postage stamps, therefore making standard mail more competitive with E-mail?

I agree with you yellow, I honestly think they should do that too.

Because mail isn't totally obselete yet (largely thanks to junk mail!), the mail carriers still have to be paid. As most people know, they are paid very well, too! The money for their wages has to come from somewhere!
As more and more people opt for the convenience of e-mail, there are fewer personal letters being sent, and more and more junk mail, which is sent at a reduced bulk mail cost.
The only thing the post office can do is keep increasing our postage rates, because the mail carriers aren't going to quietly accept pay cuts.
I would have liked to have bought a few thousand Forever stamps before the rates went up again! I think the post office should at least honor the stamps you already have before making you pay extra. That might work against them, but I hate having to make special trips to buy a bunch of 2 cent stamps to use up what I already have. At least the Forever stamps should stop that!
So, to answer your question, they can't really lower postage rates. They are supposed to be self-supporting. Mail will never compete with e-mail for convenience and speed, but an e-mail doesn't evoke warm and fuzzy feelings like an actual card or letter that came in the mail!

standard mail and email are like apples and oranges in the scope of comparisons. they are two different things. because of the speed of email standard mail cannot compete. but you can't comfortably put your computer under your pillow at night the way you can a letter or card so in the way of an emotional communication email loses. i do wish they would stop raising the price of postage.

no, because no matter what they lower it to, email will still be free and faster.
