I might be going to San Diego in late March for Spring Break...but I just want to make sure that it isn't going to be too cool. I'm pretty sure that it stays around the 70's-80's most of the year there, but I know it cools down in the winter.

Also, I'd want to be going to the beach, so what about the water temperature? I've been there a few times in the summer, and I know that the water is pretty cool there because of the currents coming from the north...so how cold would it be in late March? Would it be bearable without a wet suit?

I'm from New York so I'm not sure if I'd want to spend all of the time and money going to San Diego (Encinitas is where we would be staying) if I'm not really going to be able to enjoy the beach/ocean.

Well that's not good...if the ocean temperature is below 75 degrees than it is unbearable, but if it's in the low 60's then forget about it.

I might be turning to Florida instead...I was really looking forward to going back to Moonlight Beach, too...I hear Destin (FL) is pretty nice, though.

I agree with the first poster, San Diego in March is not that great for spring break. It can be sunny and in the 70's and 80's in March if there are Santa Ana winds or it can be cool, cloudy and in the 60's. But the average high is 66 so most likely it will be in the 60's. Last March I remember there were a week here and there of warm sunny weather but it was mostly cooler and in the 60's all month. Spring is probably the worst time for weather in SD b/c you get a lot more overcast days and lots of the marine layer than other times of the year; winter is actually statistically sunnier than spring. And the water is too cold for swimming, doesn't usually warm up enough for swimming until late May.

As much as I love San Diego, I think Florida would be better and probably cheaper since it's closer to NY.

I am a San Diego native, born and raised there and just returned to New York after spending another 2 years there. If you go to San Diego for Spring Break in March, you will be disappointed. Temperatures at the beach are usually in the high 50s to mid-60s -- it would be extremely unusual for beach area temperatures to rise above 70 degrees in March. On top of that, we often have heavy cloud cover at the beach until the afternoon. Finally, water temperatures in Spring rarely rise much above 60F -- if you don't know what that feels like, run some cold water in a bath, then put in a tray of ice cubes. In short, if your objective on Spring Break is to play at the beach and get a nice tan, there are much, much better options than San Diego -- and I love the place.

Yup, other answers are correct. Ave. high in late March would be mid to high 60s. Water temp probably in low 60s. If you are in the water it's fine in a wetsuit; wouldn't go in without one. I live in Encinitas and hit the beach with a boogie board with full wetsuit that time of year; not yet warm enough for a spring suit. If the weather is nice you'll see lots of people on the beach but few in the water. It sounds like Florida is what you're looking for...or Mexico (Cancun).
