Patty Hearst, and the Symbaniz (sic) Liberation Army. Her kidnapping and the bank robbery and all that. This is because I was living in SF at the time and it was big news as her father owned the newspaper.
In fact when they did find her, I was living about a mile away from where she was found. Eerie

The war in Vietnam, Watergate, Nixon impeached, gas shortages and drought.
Boy, do I feel like a young one now! I do remember hearing about the Manson killings. My personal headline was ..... I'm going to Germany (east and west) for a 3 week vacation with my family.

We heard it over the car radio first, when JFK was shot. And
we read it in the paper when he was declared dead the next
day. That was the biggest shock of all time for most of us
citizens I think. Because JFK was one of the most well loved
presidents I remember. Of course later rumors were exposed
and investigated on his womanizing. But it was still a shocker.
And later when Marilyn, whom he had an affair with, was
found dead, people suspected there was some tie in to the
Kennedy men. Her death was also a shock, given her age and the new upswing in her career. She had a reputation as always showing up late on the set, or not at all. And sadly, the
only thing she was on time for, was her own funeral.

hands down Steven Truscott, I can remember how shocked I was and how convinced I was this boy was innocent, and how sick to think they were going to lock him away for something he didnt do. I never believed he did it and for years I have thought about him - all through my life - now he is out, vindicated and lost most of his life, poor poor boy

Gee Cloz you're YOUNG! All she said and yours too daisy mae.

Plus up here in Canada there was the Steven Truscott case. A 14 year old boy sentenced to be hanged for murder, later commuted to life imprisonment. All the evidence pointed elsewhere. It was just resolved a couple of months ago, as a matter of fact when his original conviction was declared "a miscarriage of justice".

(Of course, I wasn't a teen then either, but it really affected me!)

I didn't know much about national news at that time but I do remember some local news that went on for weeks.

Horror upon horror one of my classmates got MARRIED and the school board wanted to keep her from attending school. She was not pregnant and eventually they let her remain in school. (Contrast that with today!)

Later that year after we graduated one fellow classmate married a Japanese person. That also was on the news for weeks! I guess the powers that be wanted to make it illegal or something. (Thank goodness times have changed.)
