I want honest answers, I want answers that say more than yes or no. I want you to explain why you think it will or wont be around. I will tell you why I am asking this.

I was sitting at home today and was on the floor wrapping my pennies,( laugh at me all you want i honestly dont care but when money is tight, hey an extra dollar here and there helps.) and I actually thought about this for a while. Our society today, other than a select few and elderly rarely use anything smaller than a dime. If one drops in the parking lot at wal-mart they dont bother picking it up.

So I ask you, will the penny still be around come 10, 20, 30 years? Will change still be around?

I feel that change still will be around but it will be converted into something larger..instead of having dimes or pennies, we will have a bigger coin worth 40 cents and it would just go up from there.

How do you feel about this. Remember, honest answers and please explain yourself.

The UK hasn't had pennies since it converted to decimal currency in 1971. What pennies are you talking about?

Edit: Australia removed its 1 and 2 cent coins from circulation in 1992 and has since rounded down or up odd amounts. Thus $1.97 becomes a charge of $2.00 and $1.91 becomes a charge of $1.90. Sweden has followed the same practice so, if you're using that quaint American anachronism for small change, it's likely that eventually your so-called pennies will be removed from circulation as they become increasingly worth less than their face value. If the transactions are electronic, then the need to round up or down isn't there because it's purely a digital electronic funds transfer. The rounding up or down would only apply to cash transactions.

As anyone who watches 'The Simpsons' knows, handling pennies is how the government gets everyone's DNA on file with the FBI. So, the penny will be around forever.
