1 + 2(a + 1) = 3(a + 4)
distibute
1 + 2a + 2 = 3a + 12
simplify
3 + 2a = 3a + 12
get like terms on one side
2a = 3a + 12 - 3
simplify
2a = 3a +9
move like terms
2a - 3a = +9
simplify
-1a = 9
simplify
-a = 9
chsnge the signs respectivly
a = -9
********A = -9********

I hope this suffices though it would have been better to do it by hand to show the moving like terms i hope this helps you

1+2(a+1)=3(a+4)
1+(2*a)+(2*1)=(3*a)+(3*4)
1+2a+2=3a+12
2a+3=3a+12
-(3a+12)=-(3a+12)
-a-9=0
-a=9
a=-9
