Heidegger said that to be a philosopher is to be a perpetual beginner. Nothing is a priori accepted in philosophy, therefore the very notion of philosophy itself is a philosophical question. Personally I am more annoyed with people, for instance Wittgensteinians or analytical philosophers, trying to restrict the definition of philosophy. I think that philosophy's borders are blurry and fade into literature and psychology and other disciplines imperceptibly.

I don't. And the pros in that league spend gobs of time on that question, so I don't mind stickin' my oar in that water. It's a great game, and the kid askin' "What is philosophy?" or "How do you define 'philosophy'?" might be a pretty good player.
What DOES annoy me is the kind of twerp who thinks that because 'philosophy' doesn't lend itself to uncontestable definition, the practice of philosophy is worthless. You know the type. They've never adjusted the rules of a game in their lives. The rules they play by are the only rules possible. Yeah, you can sneer at those and walk away from them with my blessing.
I'll just walk away, though. They might come around again later, in a more philosophical mood.

What annoys me more is people who just dump questions in philosophy which have nothing to do with it.
Oh! and Freud was not a psychologist - he was a doctor - more akin to psychiatrist.

The definitive definition of philosophy is as follows. Someone who can't do anything else and has just landed a very comfortable bearth at Oxford.

yes, yes, yes......i have a degree in philosophy and i do get annoyed with people asking for definitions...i think it's because i find the subject so interesting that i assume that if someone would read something on the subject, they would be hooked....i find that more people are not interested than are, and they think you are strange if you really dig the subject.......for honest to goodness philosophy neophytes i would recommend a book called "sophie's world" written by jostein gaarder.....i couldn't put it down...........

I don't think its so much the WORD people need to have a definition of, its the concept. People don't understand WHAT philosophy is about.... and more to the point, WHY people study it, what "use" it is.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeessss!!! very much so.
I'm tired of reading their definition with long defense, either personal opinion or based from their philosophy books or research.

Apparently, I want to sleep with my mother, I just don't don't know it.
That is from one of the worlds greatest philosophers ever. He obviously never met my mum.
