Nowadays it is really cheaper in the long run to buy a new computer than to upgrade an old one.

If you want to buy something to improve your computer's performance, I would recommend you add more RAM. Increasing the amount of RAM will give you the most bang for your buck (i.e. it is the most cost effective way to improve a computer's performance). RAM modules are relatively cheap. You can 1 GB for under $100. If you are using Windows XP, you should have at least 512 MB. If you are using Windows Vista, you should have at least 1 GB. It is really not worth it to buy a new CPU or motherboard.

To upgrade your computer, you can add RAM to the computer. A higher RAM makes your computer faster, but is not much help after 2GB of ram. A lot of RAM also does not matter much if your processor speed is low. I would start by upgrading your processor, and then your RAM. Just a note, processors are pretty expensive.

Based on your info, i would suggest a good ol' RAM upgrade and/or better CPU fan, but I suggest putting more information, such as your computer specs., exact problem ect.
