Country area codes?

ok I tried to join a website and it said to enter your mobile number (which I did) and it said you must enter the countries area code...which is 61 for Australia but it STILL wouldn't accept it, what is the correct way?

If you're using a U.S. website, it won't recognize area codes that are not three digits.
