Maybe they just don't understand:
Respect Yourself
Respect Others
Be Responsible for your actions.
TD's have now affect on your standing especially when the answer provided is accurate and factual. What it does show is the immaturity of the persons' carrying out the deed.
You can give me as many TD's as you want for my answer.

Yes, I am No Thumb Sucker Either. I Honestly Take My Time Answering All Questions, I'm An Excellent Speller, And My Spoken And Written Language Is Above Average. I Am Highly Articulate In Writing, I Have Learned Alot In A Fast Time, And Taken That Knowledge With Me. My Answers Are Lengthy. Still, I Recieve Thumbs Down. I Will Probably Even Get More For Answering This Question. I Think Some People Just Are Mean. Left Commentless!

I agree completely. Personally, I try not to give thumbs down to any well-thought out answer, whether I agree or not. Save it for those who are just being hurtful in their answers, or didn't really answer the question at all. So don't worry, *I* won't give you a thumbs down! And I don't think it's silly to be annoyed at that. It *is* really annoying.
Try to look at it this way - you must be expressing an interesting opinion to get a thumbs down. If your answer was factual, perhaps you are spreading some small bit of education to others. If it was an opinion, well, people will benefit from hearing different perspectives. if you *never* got any thumbs down, you're not being bold enough about what you believe in. :-)

It's not a stupid question. I believe that some people will thumbs down because they disagree with you, others are PO'd at you for a prior answer you gave that's unrelated, and others still give thumbs down because they feel empowered by the simple act of thumbing down.
Sometimes I post humorous replies to some questions that are (to me) obviously a joke, and I get a bunch of thumbs down!
Some people have no sense of humor...

Seriously, there are people in every section of Y!A who just go to questions and give everyone who posts a thumbs down.
Then there are people who just disagree with you, and the 'thumbs' are the only way they have of saying so.
Then there are those who either don't like you, or like someone else better, so they give you a thunmbs down and the other person a thumbs up.
Then there are the occasions it's a *privilege* to get thumbs down.
Basically, it's just entertainment with opinions. Yahoo has given the opportunity to thumbs up or down to create the impression that we are interacting with the questions and answeres here, it's all just part of the 'game'.
In fact, the thumbs are really for the people giving them, not the people getting them.
Cheers :-)

I get the same. I think the men get much much more thumbs down than the women. It seems as though the thumbs up and thumbs down are just a reflection of the number of women that are on here relative to the men who are on here.
I give thumbs up and thumbs down depending on the answer, instead of the person.

Um, you, like many others here, misunderstand the purpose of the thumbs. They are there so others can "rate" answers: correct, incorrect; good advice, bad advice; agree, disagree.
You may have put thought into an answer, and spelled it correctly, and made no grammatical errors -- none of that means that everyone who reads it agrees with what you wrote.
When people are offensive (hate speech, insulting other users, and other violations of the Guidelines), then using the Report It link, in the hope that it will be removed is the proper response.

yup, but I am not too terribly concerned with it. it only bothers me when I get the feeling someone is "following" me and giving me thumbs down... that is spooky
EDIT: Kendrick, it works both ways. but you better stop before I give you a thumbs down! jk
EDIT 2: Object, I find it funny you are posting about thumbs down (btw I didnt thumbs down you) when you have half this forum BLOCKED from answering your questions. hummm
btw are you a teacher?

it is way easier to give a posting a thumb down than to formulate an argument of your own (especially if you have a poor attention span, don't spell too well, and live under a bridge).
most of the posters here i could care less about the opinion of.
but there is a large minority whose opinions i value very much indeed.
the ones who mainly thumb i don't care about.
i only care about the ones who actually post.

Remember that peon named rebirth?
Every dumb answer he gave to any questions had been given the thumbs down, including me.
Gnu Sense hates him and reports him all the time for his vile, vulgarity.
He had answered one of your intelligent questions that I had also answered and people, including you and I had given him the thumbs down.
That should answer your question as to why people get the thumbs down for their answers.
I have gotten the thumbs down for some of my answers, simply because it was an insult to dumb questions or people simply didn't agree with me.
