I would see all the things mentioned in the post above but once you get near Oklahoma I would cut up to the 70 and travel that the rest of the way until you have to cut back down to California. It adds maybe 5-6 hours to your trip but if you are doing this for the sight seeing side of it I would definitely recommend going that way. The I-40 from Ok to CA is probably the worst drive ever as far as boring goes. There is really hardly anything to see. There are a couple of things like the petrified forest and a large crater and some of the painted desert in New Mexico but other than a few out of the way places the drive is dull. I know I went to college in Ok from Cali and I would drive it every year a couple of times or more and hated it almost every time. The one chance I had to take the 70 instead was much more scenic. I hope you look into it.

The Meteor Crater in Arizona is worth the stop. A good spot to stretch your legs, learn some facts, get some cool air, and see a great hole in the ground other than the grand canyon. Right off I-40, and worth it. Near Flagstaff is Bearizona, a cool drive through zoo where the bears are all around you. Another nice distraction.
