it depends on what you're tring to create. sand is good for candles, and such, a soup can with a formed wax model, and plaster of paris is another one. it's called lost - wax casting. please see sources below for some ideas.

Depends on what type of mold you want to make and what you are doing with it later. If you want to case something that is NOT 3 dimensional you can simply press it into a fine wet sand and plaster cast directly into the sand and you get a terrific texture.
Call you dentist and see if he has any of the stuff he makes teeth molds with (that is old and he's not going to use it) It's expensive to buy but it does get old and dentist often throw it out.

You can use one of the play doughs for an impression and then cast into the clay. Probably will not be able to use it very often.

If your project is 3 dimensional it would be very difficult for you to do without some guidance and some expensive mold making materials.
