Any college city is good in Maine. The colleges keep the cities young and active. Portland is a nice city with a good amount of things going on.
But most the cities in Maine are old and with a history, at least along the coast. And most city activity dies down during off season. The return of the tourists brings back the activities. So I am not sure Maine would be right for you all year long.

Portland - it's the hippest town in Maine.

Be ware of the tooth line - in the medical community in Maine they draw an imaginary line that starts at the NH/Maine boarder in Kittery, extends ~20 miles inland from the coast up to about Augusta - then goes straight back to the coast. Folks live on one side or the other of the tooth line. Being on the inside is a good thing.
