You can not have to much ram. It depends what your using your computer for though. If your using games i recommend at least 4 gb. If not, probably 1gb minumum.

Unless you have a fairly new PC, running MS Vista 64bit, you won't notice much of a difference adding another 2GB Ram.
Besides, there's a 3 GB limitation for Windows Vista 32 bit, however if you go with the 64 bit version of Windows, you can max out and the OS will use what is available...If you install Linux, the OS limitation is higher than your MB supports.
If RAM prices continue to fall, buying more than you need is probably a poor investment, depending on the type of OS and what applications you are running, 1 GB is fine for email or surfing the Internet, but 3 GB would be better for games.
Ram speed is another factor, if you don't replace the slower memory and just add faster memory, the memory will only run as fast as the slower memory, so it's better to replace the old memory with newer faster memory (for systems less than 3yr old) else upgrade the motherboard or replace the entire PC.

Actually, the amount of RAM a computer can handel depends on the Motherboard and the Processor. If your Motherboard is capable of handeling 4GB of RAM fine but sometimes it will cause the system to overload itself.
I had this problem after installing a Gig into a motherboard that was originally only able to handel 2 sticks of 256 to total 512. During times my computer would spaz out and I would have to reboot the computer.
So to answer your question can you have too much memory, YES you can.

I agree with craig d. have a look at some of the tech reports on places like tomshardware.com and you'll see that the extra 2 gig doesnt necessarily make a lot of difference to your system performance. It depends what you want to achieve, what your existing system specs are and weather the software you are running will utilise it. For example if its 3d graphics you want to improve the speed of, then a faster 3d card will make a _lot_ more difference to your systems capacity to do that than additional ram would. Also, you need to make sure that your motherboard is capable of handling the extra ram before putting the extra 2 gig in, if this is what you decide to do.

yes. you can have too much ram
most motherboards max out a 4-8 GB ram, and a 32-bit operating system only uses 3 GB ram.
Plus, there is not a noticable performance difference from 2 Gb ram and 4 GB ram unless you use photoshop constantly.
Other things factor in your computer speed too, like your CPU, Hard drive, and graphics card.

There is no such thing as "having too much memory on your computer". The more RAM you have the better and more efficient your computer will run. If you have the money , then get as much RAM as your computer can hold. That will result in a much faster , smoother running computer .
