Converting ice to water requires 80 calories per gram.
Water requires 1 calorie per gram to raise it one degree.
Thus an ice cube has 80 times the coolling power of water.

with ice you are below freezing which cools it down more effectively than cold water which would not taste too good either

Ice is colder than water. so it can keep the temp lower than its wamer state (liquid water).
