According to the Wikipedia, Thoth was a deification of the Moon in the Ogdoad belief system of the Old Kingdom. He became identified as the inventor of Writing, and as such in the Hellenistic period became identified with the Greek God Hermes. Indeed, Hermes Trismegistus, the combined Deity, was the reputed author of many alchemical and occultist texts.

This means the reputed time of Thoth's activities, and therefore his existence, can be said to have been from the beginning of Egyptian Civilization (and while there was a pre-dynastic period the Old Kingdom was so close it is possible they just could have not gotten around to writing down the traditions until then) until well after its end and possibly as late as the alchemists of the late middle ages.

Thoth was self created somewhere near the beginning of time I think. He's a bad *** god. LOL He's the god of magic and scholars. If you read his book of magic, you'll go mad. He's present in the Hall of Ma'at when your soul is weighed against the feather with a tablet of your deeds.
