We just got rid of our female rabbit. At first we thought she was pregnant, but then thought since their was no babies she didn't have them. So we got rid of her and then the next day we looked outside and saw a little bunny sitting next to this huge cat. We then decided to see what the heck was going on, so approached the cat and baby bunny, trying to scare the cat away so it wouldn't kill the cat. But the strange thing about it was that once we ran over to them, the cat jumped up and took the bunny in its mouth and jumped over the fence. But the cat only did that because we came over. So was the cat trying to protect the baby bunny? Or save it for dinner? I was trying to figure it out because why was the cat sitting there calmly at first, but when we came the cat ran, grabbed the bunny in it's mouth, and jumped over the fence. What is the cat doing? Defending it? Or trying to kill it? Please help.

animals are defensive like that when it comes to food...it is very unlikely that the cat would be defending the bunny for anything other than to stop you from stealing its dinner...sorry to disappoint you...but the bunny probably didnt make it.
any it may not have been a baby bunny, if it was on its own it means that it was old enough to be away from the mother meaning its atleast couple of weeks old...it is sad really, how many animals cats kill when they are allowed to roam free...i mean why is it that people think its normal to let cats out to do what ever they want? all other pets are confined to homes and yards, peoples pets should be on their own property, they shouldnt be allowed to go all over other peoples properties and jump over fences. i have had a cat kill my baby chickens before because some owner let it out at night...its wrong and i dont know why so many people think its bad to keep a cat indoors...anyway, the cat was probably doing what cats are famous for and thats killing the local wildlife...sorry if you got your hopes up =[ just the way an eagle or crow will grab an animal for lunch, they will usually not kill it until its in a safer place, so itll carry it off somewhere, especially if it thinks something else is out to steal its lunch, just like the cat, it saw you running at it so it grabbed its dinner and off it went...

Rabbits can be very delicate, so a vet just telling you to force feed it was probably not enough information. Also you have to be very careful about baby food because a lot of it contains onions which are very bad for bunnies. You might want to use something like pumpkin mix, it is full of fiber and the bunny should be able to eat it. You might want to start by just trying to offer some of the food in a bowl. If that doesn't work you can put it on a stick or a spoon and put it in front of the bunnies face, but that might not work either. The last resort should be to put the rabbit in a blanket, wrapped fairly tightly, so that the rabbit cannot squirm or hurt itself. You will need a syringe, without a needle on it, mix up the food with some water so you can get it into the syringe. Then you want to put the syringe in the rabbits mouth between the cheek and the teeth and then slowly empty the syringe. You want to do it very slowly and carefully making sure that the rabbit is swallowing and not breathing in the food. This may be a two person activity, and you might have to take breaks after a few syringes full but once the rabbit is getting some nutrition it should help it want to eat more. Also make sure that the rabbit has lots of hay to chew on, keeping some fresh veggies may also help with maintaining liquids. I hope that helps, you might want to contact your vet again to see if they can give you some syringes to start this feeding process, or even show you a good way to do it.

First did the female bunny live outside in a hutch? Then yes the baby was likely hers. Unless the female was set loose. But, you don't say so...

And the cat just took the bunny over the fence to eat it. Sorry, but that's likely what happened.

If the rabbit was old enough to move around, it wouldn't be sitting next to a cat unless it was dead. The cat has probably eaten it, sorry.

Edit: I've just remembered about my friend's rabbits. The mother wouldn't feed them, and only one survived. My friend brought it indoors, and for a few days, it would sleep with her cat, and the cat never bothered it at all. Unfortunately the same cat ate it after a few days.

Well, cats have a strong parental instinct, so i guess when u came along, it was trying 2 protect that poor little bunny rabbit.
But on the other hand, cats have a stronger hunting instinct. So maybe it was trying 2 kill it.
So sadly my friend, the cat eventually killed the bunny rabbit.
:(

Ok, this is besides the point of your question, but it is horrible to get rid of your pet just because you thought it was pregnant then it didnt have babies. If the cat wanted to hurt the rabbit, it would have done so. It was probably trying to help it, but why do you care ?

I don't think cats actually EAT rabbits. I think they just mess with them a little, like, they push the rabbits around with their paws and chase them and stuff (usually killing the bunny). Just to play. So whether or not the bunny was eaten, can never be too sure but I think not. I think the cat just took it for play.

Now where did you get rid of the rabbit? if you let it in the wild they I have a STRONG feeling that the cat was "defending" the baby rabbit. But you never know this may of just been one of those babies left then killed.....
SOrry I hope it wasn't killed though../.

It could have been a rescue, You said they were just sitting there together. It could be a female reacting to a small baby animal as some thing to help instead of eat. If it was going to eat it, the rabbit would have not been sitting there.
