The fastest way to get the money is to mine. Proceed to the second cave and bust rocks with your hammer. What you are hoping for is high-- level minerals which sell for a ton. In The third and fourth caves are good for this too, but not the first.

You can also use the greenifer method to raise high-level strawberries in the first cave.

Wood, on the other hand, can only be done the hard way, gathering it one piece at a time. The second cave is best for this since stumps spawn fastest there. This is especially true of the room one screen west and one screen north of the entrance. Higher level axes make everything faster. Combine it with the cure spell and a source of food, like rice balls, and you can chop all day.
