The US Department of Defense started the Internet

In 1969, the US Department of Defense wanted a communication system that could not be destroyed in the event of an emergency. They linked computers over telephone lines so that if one computer failed to work, the others could still communicate with each other.

I remember seeing the Internet or WWW via a Netscape Navigator browser for the first time in May 1995.

ARPAnet started it all in 1963.

The internet was a soruce of communications awhile back for military and scientists in the case of an emergency. Then it became Research oriented. then in 1991 it was released to the public!
