I fancy a small dogfish or catfish.. but can u get small ones that don't grow enormous.. at the moment I have a 6.1 gallon tank / about 30 litres tank. My tank is small but i'd only have it in with plants by itself.

The only "dogfish" I'm, aware of is the dogfish shark. These get about 4 feet long, and since any tank sould be at least the full length of the fish in it, you'd need a tank that's a minimum of 4ft x 4ft x 4ft, or 478 gallons (approximate). I'd leave these to public aquaria.

Freshwater catfish come in a range of sizes. Some of the smaller species, like otocinclus catfish or dwarf corydoras catfish you could keep in your current tank, although they'd probably have to be the only type of fish. Both are schooling species, and should be in a group of at least 3. If you would have a slightly larger tank (about a 10 gallon) you'd be able to keep one type of the smaller cats, plus some other fish.

The only dogfish that I can recall is a coldwater species that we can catch in and around Lake Erie. These are considered a nuisance and seem to drive the other fish away. These can grow to around 6 to 8 inches and have a voracious appetite. You will definitely need a larger tank and plenty of aeration to keep these

A good rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water per inch of fish.
You don't want to go out and buy a 10 inch fish for a 6 gallon tank because it just won't be comfortable for it but getting a very small fish and letting it grow into your tank will be fine.
