I'm a college student and don't know a whole lot about this stuff, but I'm wondering if it is necessary to have an exhaust hose coming off my clothes dryer? I doesn't really seem necessary to me unless there is some health risk involved. It would also be a cheap way to save heat as it just blows out hot air. Please help me. Thank you.

Yes, you do need that hose: It sends hot WET air out. Believe you me, even if there weren't the health risks from mold, possible carbon monoxide, and lint which might spontaneously combust, that is just about enough to give you heat stroke.

If its a gas dryer you need it to vent out the fumes. If its electric
you will get all the heat, all the moisture, that was in the clothes, and also lint, if you run it with the hose off. The lint can be caught by disconnecting the hose where it goes thru the wall and putting a stocking over the end of the hose, held on with a rubber band. The moisture might not be a problem if you don't have a large load or if your air is very dry. You not only recover all the heat produced by the dryer but you also save all the heat that was in the air that the dryer sucked in and would have been exhausted outside. That exhaust air causes a negative airpressure in your house or appartment, which draws outside air into your house. If the air outside is COLD, your heating system now has to heat that air back to room temp. So if you don't disconnect the vent hose and you let all the air go outside, it's much more energy efficient NOT to use your dryer on very cold days

I think the duct tape will be just fine. Flutes and tail pipes will get much hotter than the dryer duct. Point being so the tape doesn't melt. If it does melt..who cares..your going to replace the flex tube anyways. My question to you is..why did u spen 4-5 dollars on duct tape when you could have bought a new flex hose for about 7-8 dollars from home depot???

It doesn't just blow out hot air, it blows out hot, damp air, along with anything the filter doesn't catch. You'll be creating a lot of humidity by exhausting the dryer into your room, plus damage any electronics (computer, TV, stereo, etc.) over time.

yes the lint is combustible. they do make a thing that is meant to be used indoors. you put water in it to catch the lint making it safe to be used indoors. check your local hardware store.
