I did it in a very "no-thrills" manner. I told my future wife we would get engaged before the end of that year. One day in July, she and her mother were checking on the availability of reception halls on Saturdays in the upcoming spring. They were filling up fast, and the one they wanted had one April Saturday opening. She asked me, and I said, "Sure, go ahead and reserve it." Not very romantic I know, but we have been happily married for six and a half years.

Are you a writer? You sound like a writer. I have had more than one (accepted) proposal. My first husband, who later hated me because I put him through school although I was not financially endowed, had the most touching proposal.
(To this day, I'm not sure if he was acting...bec of later betrayal.)
1. He had come to visit me in my parents home. We sat together on the front room sofa. I was a student at community college. We didn't have cars, his friend dropped him off. He began by appologizing with tears for a physical leg deformity and then said, "I would be very honored, if you would be my wife. Will you?" Me, being the usual scardy-cat said..."I want to say 'yes, but I need to pray about it.' Three days later I said 'yes.' (p.s.: I was 19 and there were many other questions I should have asked myself, God, AND him, but 2 wonderful children were one result of a 12-year marriage.)
2. Two and a half years after my divorce was final from the hater of my soul, I had moved to a new city bec of my employer. I was invited out to lunch after I invited my neighbor to my church (in my apts) whose daughter had apparently 'signed off' on the prospect of her dad's relationship to me on a previous lunch. He was a salesman and he took me to a cozy restaurant after I had invited him to visit my church. His line, as the appetizer arrived was, "So, WHEN are we getting married?" I laughed first, as if it were a joke (he was an eccentric Jersey-boy), then I saw he was looking serious! He wasn't laughing! All he talked about through the whole lunch was...'ho-o-oly matrimony.' I told him, 'I really have to pray about it.' This time I waited 3 weeks and asked both my 6 and 8-yr old what my answer should be, before I said 'yes.' (p.s.: Their votes counted heavily...but they were younger than ME when I said 'yes' at 19! Epitaph: 5 years later he left us and disappeared after I lost my bank job in a reorganization/acquisition. He hated my children when they became adolescents.) THE TRUTH

Well this was back in 1979, so it was nice to me but some people might not think so but we were in bed and he knew how strict my father was we were'nt allowed to live with our boyfriends so he asked me "what would it take to get u to move in here with me" he had bought a house a year before that and he had already said decorate it how you want it cause u will be living here one day. back to the question he answered "i guess it would take a ring huh" and i said yea i'm afraid so. but it didn't take a ring all i had to do was to say yes i will marry you and he said how did u know i was gonna ask you and i said well were'nt you and of course we kissed and married Jan 15 of 1980. God Bless

I was looking at rings and he said 'Do you want one?'. Didn't actually propose till 2 days later in the chippy and have been happily married for 2 years.

Oh this is so whacked....we went to a local pub and he pulled the black case out of a pocket and opened it and just SAT there, LOOKING at me, SILENT!!! So I said "is that for me?" and he said "Yes, do you want it". So he never really did propose. He just gave me the ring. I should have known then and there he would be a schmuck.

My boyfriend put a ring (in the box) in my lap when we were at a comedy club which was quite ironic since our marriage was a joke. We are no longer married.

He didn't.

We were going to Tahiti for 2 weeks and decided to make it a honeymoon.

So we got married first with just family and very close friends.

We've been married now for 32 years.

We are both thinking adults, who don't do things in traditional ways. We looked at our options and for a variety of reasons mostly legal and finacial we decided the best course would be marriage. I did have to compromise and do a wedding, it was important to his family. We have been married for almost five years.

He took me on a weekend getaway. We went to a senic overlook, he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring.
I thought he was joking :)
When I realized he was serious, I laughed and said yes. His next words were, "don't drop the ring!"
It was one of the happiest days of my life!

Sitting on the beach on a fallen palm tree.
Not breathless, but definitely a surprise.
And there was a ring, too:-)
