It should be okay to do. Sometimes, the bottom of the mattress spring is not as well-covered as the top, so I'd put a fitted sheet over it before putting the mattress on top--just to make it look nicer. I realize it might not ever be seen, so it certainly wouldn't be necessary.

They used to fill them with straw or corn shucks. ( something has to hold the sides apart!) Springs are cleaner. My matress is memory foam--not a spring in sight (or out of it!).

Just messin with ya. I think it's because they thought it was more comfortable than straw, so they went with it. those Temper Pedic beds are the best though, they're so soft and comfy!

I think they do it so kids can have a Hell of a good time jumping on the beds. Otherwise, a futon would do just fine.

For firm-ness and so you can jump on it.LOL But I think it's cuz if they didn't it be like sleeping on the floor just flat.And then no one would buy them.
