Tyranny of the majority (democracy) is the alternative to tyranny of the minority (dictatorship). It's a belief that the majority isn't always right about everything, which is true. But in my own opinion, neither are a few "judges" who can supposedly rule without bias. It makes as much sense as crowning a king.

Tyranny of the majority refers to the idea that if the majority rules on all matters then individual rights would be vulnerable.
If the majority were purple people, they could decide that only purple people can vote. Only purple people can own land. Only purple people can have a license. Only purple people can own firearms.

That is why we are not a pure democracy. We are a Constitutional democratic republic.
Or, at least we were before the International Corporate Fascists staged a coup some 44 years ago.
The final nail is the effective flushing of the Constitution after 9/11.
History will show that those who follow the International Corporate Fascists who have seized control of this country like a fatal case of dysentery were akin to Nazi sympathizers in the 1930's.

All words have very specific meanings that are relevant to their context. The phrase “liberal democracy“ refers to a democratic system (representative or direct) within which we witness the rule of law, human rights are respected to some extent and elections are “free and fair.“ Likewise, the wording of Tocqueville doesn‘t refer to welfare programs... nor any specific ideological leanings. It refers to a situation wherein voters stop taking part into the political life of their state or city. The author probably doesn‘t have a lot of knowledge regarding philosophy or history... or even of political sciences. In effect, considering the way these words have been and still are used in formal and academic papers, it actually makes no sense at all... ensuring that people have right or that elections are fair do not make the majority an authoritarian group. EDIT Do people understand what is a tyranny? It is surrender of power. The greek tyrants where people who ruled as kings for a definite period of time... a democratically elected government would surrender its power to tyrant for one or two years in order to quickly solve certain problems. That‘s how Tocqueville thought of tyranny: people who stop taking part in politics, who limited their political exercice to voting.

Tyranny:
Absolute rule.
Pure democracy is mob rule and thus, tyranny.
That is why we have a federal republic based on democratic principles.

Here is another form of tyranny
According to a 2005 congressional report, the USA supplies 36% of the trade in world arms, some estimates put that as high as 60%. Whereas, in that same report, China sells on 3%

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what I think.
In a majority-rules system, it's when the majority of people are stupid enough to support a cruel and oppressive form of government.
This might happen when most people are scared into believing they need a controlling government to keep them "free" and "safe."

It is Muslim nations like Egypt and Saudi Arabia forcing non-Muslim women to wear the Burka, not allowing them to drive a car, and not being allowed out in public with a man other than their husband or father.
It is Muslim nations terrorizing Christians, burning their churches, and killing them with no official objection.
