Yes, obviously he was indeed a Conservationist. Otherwise there would be no cover for his hiding from the Sheriff.

Republican...

Worked hard to return money back to the people and out of the hands of the government.

He organized his marry men as to better themselves and be something without the aid of government handouts and create an atmosphere where they could be successful on their own.

Basically, he did what was right at the time.
