I'm a senior in high school and i plan on attending University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign as a biological sciences major with a pre-med emphasis. I was wondering if joining an honors program is important for medical schools? At U of I it say that you need a minimum ACT score of a 28. I received a 26, but i have a 5.0/5.0 GPA, 6/160 class ranking but i wouldn't be able to get into the honors program. I was wondering if you can apply end of freshman year for an honors program for sophomore year? I'm not a good standardized test taker but i'm good at taking test with my AP calc, AP chem, AP english, etc and I don't want the ACT to limit what i'm able to do! Any advice?

The average ACT at UIUC is 28. Your GPA is high enough in which you should be able to get in assuming you applied by the priority date, which is in early November.
At UIC, if you meet one requirement for Honors College as an incoming freshman, you are allowed to do a supplemental application, which will determine if they will accept you or not.
I was in Honors College at UIC, and it was not a big deal. It's not the end of the world if you are not in the Honors College. Your college grades and MCATs are way more important in determining your acceptance to Med school than anything else.

Congratulations on your drive and energy! You are on the right path, and the first two years in college will be basically science and math, plus your general education requirements. Yes, plain old biology is overdone, but there are options other than bioengineering. There are particular bioscience courses, plus areas like genetics, epidemiological studies, bioscience (different than engineering), and cellular and molecular biology (very big right now). All would be good pre-reqs for medical school as long as you take other courses like anatomy & physiology and other MCAT-prep courses. You can consider something like being a volunteer EMT or other out-of-hospital work, and you might also find a laboratory assistant position.

If you want to go to medical school, don't go to a college where you're going to be outclassed by the competition. U of I not only has some of the best students from around the country but from around the world.

How many times have you taken the ACT? It took me three tries to get that 26. :(
