The point of Enoch Powell`s speech was not racist , but rather economical.
The average British family at the time consisted of 1 wage earner, with the mother possibly doing some part time work to support an average of 2 children.
The immigrants were coming here to find work, but their culture did not include the woman going out to work, rather staying at home, plus their culture involves many offspring as well as grandparents, who were looked after by the breadwinner.
Thus the strain on the British economy would be stretched to breaking point with the immigrants, who held British passports, being allowed to draw benefits.
Hence, the economics of the situation did not add up.

It depends on whether you're agreeing with Enoch Powell, an academic whose was quoting from Virgil, or the racist idiots who associate themselves with mis-quotes of the final paragraph of his famous, dramatic speech. Looked at objectively Powell was absolutely right, but for a politician to say so in the presence of a less objective audience (i.e. the media) is either courageous or stupid.

In the most focused sense, no. According to your article, the man was simply agreeing that unbrideled immigration was a very bad idea. For a statement of that nature to be racist, it would have had to mention some particular race. In that statement, he was speaking of every race that might want to immigrate.
(Another point to consider is that nationality is not race. Were he to say, "I hate Frenchmen and don't want them immigrating here," that also is not racist. It is nationalistic, since these days the French can be of all sorts and persuasions.)

A point of view, but there is no longer free speech in this so called United Kingdom.
However we have to take a rational view of the matter and the fact is that our social structure which was decimated by Thatcher is in no shape to support endless thousands of extra people regardless of their race or where they come from.

it would be most interesting to find out what percentage of the British people agree with what Enoch said in his speech, and how many would, in the light of this countries increasing violence disagree.

Why do we continue to say "Enoch Powell was right". This was the idiot as a Cabinet Minister decided to bring over Afro/Caribbeans to do jobs that English would not do. This numpty felt that the Afro/Caribbeans were inferior & would be glad of menial jobs.
The answer is that all people in this world are the same & Enoch Powell was wrong!!!!!! If he was right & they were inferior, why did allow the Africans in. At the end of the day the African people have & are enhancing our society......so who was wrong......that numpty Powell.

No it's not being racist, it is just voicing your opinion.
Enoch Powell was right when he said that you once you start , where does it stop, regardless of what the government might say. Just give you a few facts for you to think about, firstly the NHS can not cope because of the influx from other countries, there is not enough work in this country now for British people and there is not enough housing...

Enoch Powell was an unsuccessful minor politician forty years ago. Does it matter what he said? It amuses me that this speech is still considered relevant at all! Can't these people find a more recent extreme right-wing lunatic to quote?

Anything done said or thought by a white Englishman is racist if we were listen to the idiots who are allowing the ridiculousness to continue, now apparently we cant have Christmas because it offends the Muslims, what next I ask were will it end, what creates hatred is the stupidity of our legal system who change English laws to cater for incoming foreigners, but do not allow the same laws to protect the British are we a joke or what, we pay for criminals like Hamza to be here then he attacks us with his hatred messages, then we give him human rights, the mans an Animal, we import thieves for goodness sake we've got plenty here of our own, if people want to come to England and live because of the poor conditions in their own countries why as soon as they get here do they want to change England to be like were they have come from, if your religion or faith is in conflict with our laws then don't come here you have the rights to worship what ever faith allows you to comply with British law others that go home or better still don't come here in the first place.
