You shouldn't ever lie on a resume or application!

If they look at your resume and your application and see the difference, you could have some major problems.

Anything your SS# is connected too will show up in the background check (if they are verifing your degree or employment).

I don't advice it. There are ways you can reword your resume to make it more appealing without lying.

If you lie on a resume and get caught, many companies will fire you.

Lying isn't a legal matter so your comment about "sworn statement" is irrelevant. If your employer knows that you lie, he's not likely to trust you, or want you around.

If your employer relied on the representations in the resume and they included some false and misleading representations, your employer still can terminate you. In the alternative, if you ever sue them for any reason, your employer can seek to limit your claim by pointing to the falsehoods if the ramifications of which are sufficient to constitute after-acquired evidence.

Falsification of employment documents (resumes or applications).

This can occur at any time (no time limit) following employment.
