Legal also depends on whether a DWA license is required (UK). The list of exotics are endless and "exotic" only applies if it is a reptile non-native to it's country of keeping. A bearded dragon is exotic in the UK yet in Australia, they are native so commonplace. Also, do you mean exotic with a dangerous tinge! Any of the DWA snakes and lizards for the UK are highly exotic and can be very rare.

I would hate to try to list them by popularity, but the most common pet reptiles kept in the US would include:
Red-ear Sliders
Corn Snakes
Common Boas
Green Iguanas
American Anoles
Now, amongst the people who know what in the heck they are doing, the list would change- but these are the ones that sell the most often, and the most supplies are sold for.
