By "astrologist," if you mean astrologer, they really don't use any tools. They get information provided by astronomers. Before modern science, astrology involved very careful observation of the heavens and documenting of stars and planetary movements. These were believed to cause certain kinds of events on earth. Later, astrology got into telling people's fortunes by use of a horoscope. There never has been any evidence that astrology works. It is based on superstition and ancient folklore, so it really is bunk. But as long as there are gullible people, astrology will thrive.

Astronomy is a science that evolved out of astrology. Now it has nothing to do with astrology except that both involve the study of celestial bodies. So astronomers use telescopes, space probes, spectrographs, interferometers, and detectors of various designs which can sense frequencies across the electromagnetic spectrum from longwave radio to gamma rays, and allow us to "see" the Universe in all of its detail.

It's not really a stupid assignment if you come out of it realizing that astrology is bunk and astronomy is legitimate science.
