I have a freelander TD4, 2003. The starter is turning over but the engine is not firing up. The engine warning light stays lit up, Any ideas from either td4 owners or mechanics please....thanks

Thanks everyone except the one's talking mush about timing belts and spark plugs(this car has neither). I've had a diagnostic check and it turned out to be the main fuel pump in the fuel tank. £350 inc. labour and vat, thankfully covered under warranty.

Hmm, how the heck you check spark plugs on a diesel I'll never know, or indeed, never seen a snapped timing chain either.......

Seems people have forgotten the small fact that the TD4 engine is actually a BMW unit and tough as old boots.

When did you last change the glow plugs? 9 times out of ten 10 diesels don't fire because the glow plugs have had it, and unlike spark plugs, they tail off over time with the sign being poor starting.

If the engine light stays on, there's an electrical problem somewhere and I could give you 100 different causes, but best to get someone to take a look.

If you have noticed a gradual decline in the engines starting then it will have been the glow plugs, My 205 will start with two working but is not a happy bunny, so maybe you have now only one that works. Go for them first, then if it is not the glow plugs go for the fuel system.

When a diesel won't start it is usually a fuel problem. You need to run a fuel pressure check and also find out what is causing the warning light.

Spray some easy start into the air intake system.
This will show whether the glow plugs are working or not.

check the spark plugs and if they have a residue between the contacts, hold them over a lit gas ring to burn it off for a second
