The best thing that would help you to answer this question is if you know your divisibility rules. (To learn these, go to http://mathforum.org/dr.math/faq/faq.divisibility.html. They are VERY helpful instead of having to do a zillion long division problems the way I was taught!) Obviously, because 85 ends in a 5, it is divisible by 5. If you do 85 divided by 5, you get 17 (which is a prime number, as is 5). Since both numbers are prime, the prime factorization would be 17X5. Do you know also how to do factorization 'trees'? This is a good way to visually see how a number factors out. A really good powerpoint that walks you through step by step can be found on www.tburg.k12.ny.us. Hope this helps!

17x5=85 Thus the prime factors of 85 are 5 and 17, since both 5 and 17 are prime numbers.

17*5.
Since 85 ends in 5 it is divisible by 5.
17 is not divisible by any prime less than its
square root, namely 2 and 3, so it is prime.
