I hired a chimney sweep to clean my flue. $80 U.S. currency. I didn't want to go up on the roof (2 story house). He attached a brush to a 3' piece of flexible fiberglass rod and shoved up my chimney, he kept screwing on another piece until he got all the way to the top and then he reversed the procedure. It took him 7 minutes and he was gone. I bought the brush and rods for less than $30 at Menard's home center. and do it myself. I clean the inside of the fireplace with TSP< tri-sodium phosphate> and hot water...wear gloves. I use a shop vacuum to clean up the soot from the chimney.

Naturally , you are talking about cleaning the flue and the interior of the chimney. There are special formulated log type items that are supposed to clean out any prior buildups. Your local hardware store should be able to accomodate you. There are also chimney sweep companies or individuals who do that type of work.
