You need a good outdoor cat to take care of the mice. Expect to see a few mice in your house this time of year because they are looking for winter shelter. An exterminator can set out appropriate bait stations. Or, you can set a few traps baited with peanut butter. Just set them along baseboards where the mice usually like to travel. As for opossums...we have a resident we have affectionately named Pete, the Porch Possum. He helps himself to leftover catfood on our porch. We tolerate each other because opossums eat japanese beetle grubs...which are more evil than mice. Any wild animal like opossums, groundhogs, and the like will become aggressive if they are cornered. Ordinarily they will turn tail and run if they hear or see you coming, but you (or your dog) will probably lose the argument if you get into a fight with one.Don't know what kind of dog you have, but mice don't stand a chance with mine. He uncovered a nest of baby mice that were still pink and hairless...thought they were snausages and ate them. Ya live near the wild, yer bound to cross paths once in a while.

Depending on what part of the country you live in the possum may not be native. Here in Wa. we "relocate" them. They compete with the native wildlife for food. Besides they are nasty.

Human Urine will repel them somewhat. Collect yours and pour it around the yard. Moth balls also work.
