Motorcyclists shouldn't HAVE to wear helmets, but it's a good idea if they do. It's bad enough that we have to deal with inconsiderate, inattentive, incompetent, and just downright rude drivers that we share the road with, but we have to deal with unexpected road hazards that can hurt us almost as badly as a car can: loose sand, oil on the roadway, etc. Just because a rider hasn't gone down doesn't mean they CAN'T go down. All it takes is the right combination of unfortunate circumstances and that helmet will come in handy. And THAT'S why I CHOOSE to wear one when I ride.

This is a question that has been around forever. I think each rider needs to decide for themself to wear or not to wear a helmet. The government has no business telling adults what to wear. I predict some day there will be a study done and it will be determined that motorcyclists that wear boxer underwear survive more collisions that those who wear briefs. Then we'll have mandatory laws requiring the wearing of boxer underwear.
Those that have answered "it's the law" obviously do not live in a choice state. I live in a state with no helmet law. Some riders don't wear them and some do. Based on my observations while riding, about 85%-90% of riders don't wear helmets. This percentage increases when the temperature gets into the 90s. I've seen 100% without helmets numerous times. Today I was out on my bike for a short time and the temperature was between 50 and 55. I saw about 20 bikes with not one rider wearing a helmet. It's clear to me that if given a choice, most riders would rather not wear one.
Let those that ride decide.

I live in Oregon. Many moons ago you didn't have to wear helmets. Clearly helmets are safer. When I would ride around town or in the country I loved to ride without a helmet but if I was going anywhere on the freeway I would always wear one. Flying rocks, peoples trailers coming unhitched in front of you, etc. faster speeds. I miss not having the choice. There are smaller helmets that are still legal but not as safe.

I think it should be up to the person riding. I've been riding 34 years now and use common sense when riding, and have never wrecked or dropped a bike. I've had three good friends killed on bikes but were all speeding and wearing helmets. The main thing is common sense. Just because the light is green doesn't mean go through without looking. The other person may not have looked, and ran the light.

Yes. Everyone should have to wear a full face helmet. Even in cars as that would save more lives than are lost on motorcycles.

No one should be made to do anything! Free Country and in Texas if your over 21 and insured with enough medical insurance take the helmet off if you want. I am sorry I left enough brain cells behind I always wear a good new helmet even in cars at the race track. The case can be made the weight of the helmet causes more neck injury. It is the Motor cycleist who pulls along side with cut off jeans and sandals. Just put down a bike at speed once they would wear leather and boots gloves

I think that they should, but if they don't want to wear a helmet and are involved in a accident which results in death from brain injuries I don't think they should be able to sue if the other person is at fault, because the failure to wear a helmet contributed to their death.

I ride everyday as my main source of transportation and I choose to wear a full face helmet everywhere I go. I feels nice and free to not have one on, but here in Dallas it does not matter how good of a rider I am, it is that other person in a "cage" (car) that weights a few thousand pounds talking on a cell phone not paying attention to me that I am worried about.
True you should have the choice as with most things in life. In fact having taken a rider's safety coarse in the past, I will be sending in for my helmet exemption sticker, but will continue to wear mine 99% of the time.

I believe that it should be required for all riders under the age of 18, and all riders with less then 2 years (or seasons) experience. Also the rider should should be mandated to go through an approved riders safety course, which includes training on the reasons for wearing a helmet.
In other words, they should be educated , not legislated.
